Causes of landslide in chittagong: A heavy rainfull during a shorter period of time can lead to a large scale landslide in a hill area. A study by yalcin 2007 concluded that an intense rainfall of 70 mm per hour or greater will create landslide favorable condition. Rainfall in chittagong is second highest in the country with an annual average of approximately 3000mm per year, having maximum recorded rainfall in june. The month of june andjuly shows most landslide frequency in chittagong, confirming strong relationship nof heavy rainfall and landslide in the country.

Hill cutting and heavy rainfall are prime factors for landslides in chittagong that causes death to hundreds of people with a great prosperity loss. This catastrophe could be checked by controlling the grabbing of government owned land and by understanding the rainfall pattern and its true relationship with landslide in the region.

Collapse of building: Recently a five storied building toppled in to three tinshed houses on the cities begunbari area and killed 25 people. From the away the five storied structure fell down, it appears there was no proper plan for the building, nor was any rule or code followed during its construction. It is also patently clear that the workmanship and engineering as well as the materials that went into the making of that house were also of very poor quality..

Obviously, the begunbari case is not the first of its kind, as we know of other instances of similar building collapse in the past at tejgaon, saver and in the older part of city .

Real Madrid four point win Ronaldo netted seventh hat-trick of the La Liga campaign

Leaders Real Madrid restore their four-point gain over chase Barcelona when Cristiano Ronaldo netted his seventh hat-trick of the La Liga campaign in a 4-1 drubbing of city neighbors Atletico on Wednesday.

Ronaldo was the variation between the sides at the Calderon and the Portuguese intercontinental shattered in a free kick to open the scoring in the 25th minute before Radamel Falcao nodded an equaliser 10 minutes into the second half.

Atletico, who have not beaten Real in almost 13 years, pressed forward in search of an not likely victor but Ronaldo made it 2-1 in the 68th minute when he drift in from the left and arrowed a long-range shot over goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The goal incensed some of the home fans and they pelt the Real players with plastic bottles as they celebrated jointly in the corner of the pitch.

He is one ahead of Barca forward and World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, who scored the Spanish champions’ second goal on Tuesday.

BIT TENSE

Ronaldo, who sent Jose Callejon clear on the right in the 88th minute to score Real’s fourth, said he and his team mates had been emotion the force after Barca’s victory.

“We were a bit tense as we knew that Barca had won yesterday and we had to win,” Ronaldo, who is the first player in the history of Europe’s top four leagues to net 40 goals in consecutive seasons, said in a television interview.

“I am very pleased that the team won, that I scored and set up a goal and we have to carry on in the same way.

“There is still some way to go in the league but we are closer to the title now.”

Real, who play at Barca’s Nou Camp stadium on April 21, have 82 points from 32 matches, with Barca on 78. Europa League semi-finalists Atletico are ninth on 42 points and in danger of missing out on a place in Europe next season.

In the earlier kickoffs, Valencia climbed above Malaga into third and an automatic qualification slot for next season’s Champions League when a Jonas double helped them to a 4-1 win at home to Rayo Vallecano.

Jordi Alba and Pablo Hernandez also struck for the Europa League semi-finalists, who have 52 points.

Valencia’s less illustrious city neighbours Levante missed a chance to go fourth when they surrendered the lead and lost 3-2 at relegation-threatened Sporting Gijon.

They stay fifth on 48 points, two behind Malaga who play at struggling Villarreal on Thursday and can reclaim third with a win at the Madrigal.

Athletic Bilbao, who are also through to the last four of the Europa League but whose La Liga form has been erratic, had to come from two goals down to rescue a 2-2 draw at 10-man Granada and are seventh on 42 points.

European Union banned imports of oil from Iran

Reuters) – The European Union banned imports of oil from Iran on Monday and imposed a number of other economic sanctions, joining the United States in a new round of measures aimed at deflecting Tehran’s nuclear development program. In Iran, one politician responded by renewing a threat to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, an oil exporting route vital to the global economy, and another said Tehran should cut off oil to the EU immediately. That might hurt Greece, Italy and other ailing economies which depend heavily on Iranian crude and, as a result, won as part of the EU agreement a grace period until July 1 before the embargo takes full effect. A day after a US aircraft carrier, accompanied by a flotilla that included French and British warships, made a symbolically loaded voyage into the Gulf in defiance of Iranian hostility, the widely expected EU sanctions move was likely to set off further bellicose rhetoric in an already tense region. Some analysts say Iran, which denies accusations that it seeking nuclear weapons, could be in a position to make them next year. So, with Israel warning it could use force to prevent that happening, the row over Tehran’s plans is an increasingly pressing challenge for world leaders, not least US President Barack Obama as he campaigns for re-election in November. Meeting in Brussels, foreign ministers from the 27-state EU, which as a bloc is Iran’s second-biggest customer for crude after China, agreed to an immediate ban on all new contracts to import, purchase or transport Iranian crude oil and petroleum products. However, EU countries with existing contracts to buy oil and petroleum products can honor them up to July 1. EU officials said they also agreed to freeze the assets of Iran’s central bank and ban trade in gold and other precious metals with the bank and state bodies. Along with US sanctions imposed on December 31, the Western powers hope choking exports and hence funding can force Iran’s leaders to agree to curbs on a nuclear program the West says is intended to yield weapons. EU SEEKS TALKS EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said: “I want the pressure of these sanctions to result in negotiations. “I want to see Iran come back to the table and either pick up all the ideas that we left on the table … last year … or to come forward with its own ideas.” Iran has said lately that it is willing to hold talks with Western powers, though there have been mixed signals on whether conditions imposed by either side make new negotiations likely. The Islamic Republic insists it is enriching uranium only for electricity and other civilian uses. It has powerful defenders against the Western action in the form of Russia and China, which argue that the new sanctions are unnecessary, and can also probably count on China and other Asian countries to go on buying much of its oil, despite U.S. and European efforts to dissuade them.
